Discover The Hare, A Heartwood Inn

Tucked into a leafy corner of north-west London, The Hare, A Heartwood Inn feels like the kind of place you stumble upon once and then keep returning to. The address-Weald, Brookshill, Old Redding, Harrow HA3 6SD, United Kingdom-sounds almost countryside, and honestly, the vibe matches. I first visited on a drizzly weekday evening after a long drive, and within minutes it was clear this wasn’t just another pub with plates. It was warm, organised, and quietly confident in what it does.

The menu strikes a balance between classic British comfort food and modern diner-style polish. On my first visit, the chalkboard specials leaned heavily into seasonal produce, something that’s become a hallmark of well-run kitchens. According to data from the UK Hospitality sector, over 70 percent of diners now prefer menus that change with the seasons, and that attention to freshness shows here. Dishes arrive well-paced, not rushed, and clearly thought through. The Sunday roast has built a loyal following locally, and for good reason: crisp potatoes, properly rested meat, and gravy that tastes like it’s been simmering all day.

What really stands out is the process behind the scenes. Staff are trained to explain dishes without sounding rehearsed, a small detail that signals experience. On one visit, I watched a server walk a table through allergy options with calm clarity-something the Food Standards Agency continues to emphasise as essential for diner safety and trust. That level of care doesn’t happen by accident; it comes from consistent systems and a kitchen that knows its ingredients inside out.

Drinks are treated with the same respect as food. The bar focuses on well-kept beer, a rotating wine list, and spirits that don’t feel like afterthoughts. Fans of real ale will appreciate the cellar management, which aligns with standards long championed by CAMRA for quality and freshness. If you’re not drinking alcohol, the non-alcoholic options go beyond the usual soft drinks, which makes the place feel inclusive rather than tokenistic.

The dining room itself blends rustic touches with modern comfort. Think soft lighting, wood finishes, and the unmistakable pull of an open fire on colder evenings. It’s the sort of setting that works equally well for a relaxed family meal or a low-key business catch-up. Reviews across major platforms often mention the atmosphere, and that consistency matters. Research from TripAdvisor shows that ambience ranks just behind food quality when people choose where to eat, and this place clearly understands that equation.

Location plays a role too. Being set slightly away from busy high streets gives it a destination feel, yet it’s still easy to reach if you’re in Harrow or nearby areas. Parking is straightforward, which sounds minor but makes a big difference for repeat visits. Locals I’ve spoken to treat it as a neighbourhood anchor-somewhere reliable for birthdays, quiet lunches, or just a decent midweek dinner.

No restaurant is perfect, and it’s fair to note that peak times can get busy, especially weekends. Booking ahead is smart if you want a specific time or table. That said, the kitchen handles volume well, and wait times stay reasonable even when the place is full. From a trust perspective, that consistency is key; it shows systems are in place rather than things running on luck.

Overall, the experience feels grounded in real hospitality rather than hype. The combination of thoughtful menus, a strong sense of place, and well-trained staff makes The Hare, A Heartwood Inn more than just another stop for food. It’s a place built on process, care, and an understanding of what diners actually value when they sit down to eat.

  • Been meaning to go for a long time and finally made it on a lovely summers day. Tiered garden at the back with outdoor seating. Beautiful decor inside for a cosy elevated feel. We ordered the scotch egg as a nibble to start with which was made fresh and one of the best we had ever had. Followed up with chicken liver parfait and the home made beef burger. The parfait was exceedingly flavourful whilst the burger was juicy and tasty. Service was spot on and pricing were reasonable. Would recommend and we'll be back.

  • Despite being on the side of a busy road, this pub has a lovely garden hidden out at the back. The inside is also lovely - v cosy with cute book piles and hare themed decor. There are a wide range of fish, meat, vegetarian and vegan dishes. The puddings are especially delicious, including the sticky toffee pudding and the coconut and mango sticky rice.

  • The Hare is an exceptional Gastro pub with impeccable service especially from Boney! and decor is very fitting. Great service from a clearly experienced team. We had the chateaubriand which was cooked perfectly, and the fries were also on par with the perfectly cooked meat. The signature dessert was also brilliant!

  • Overall I had an enjoyable meal. To start I had the truffle arancini, which was an earthy, lovely mouthful. My friend had the cheese souffle, which came with a jug of cheese sauce so you to control how much to pour over the souffle. Pigs in blankets were perfectly crispy, zero sogginess, which is how it should always be! We both got the cod, which is usually the most personality-free of the fishy world, but the chorizo and beans brought it to life. My buttery cabbage was yum and my friend loved her truffle mash. For dessert, I tried the pistachio souffle - their bestseller. I’d been warned it was sweet, so I was prepared, but while it was pleasant, I didn’t get the 'wow factor', as it didn’t really have much flavour, the chocolate ice cream it came with upstaged it entirely. My friend's chocolate dessert, was rich and far more indulgent than my soufflé. Overall, a lovely gastropub.

  • Absolutely amazing food!! I went with my team for a Xmas lunch and I would say one of the best foods I ever had in London! In fact all my colleagues were impressed as much as me. We ordered different dishes and all of them were just delicious. I had artichoke soup, dark chocolate & cherry desert with baileys and duck with blackberries as a main. We are definitely going back there again, I highly recommend this place especially if you are after quality meal, this is a place for you!
